Even better when the car comes back for re-test with the private plate on.

I've seen this happen a few times. You buy the car new, or nearly new & then take it back to the dealers for first MOT. The dealer generates a jobcard for the MOT based on your customer details, including the VIN number and old registration, because they wont know you've now got a cherished plate.
Job card gets passed to the tester who then logs on the vehicle details from the job card, instead of physically checking the vehicle details & clocking the 'cherished transfer' plate.
Hey presto you got a VT20 with the wrong registration on it - dealers/testers fault, but you will have a job getting them to admit.
However, if you'd done the cherished transfer before the first MOT, AND had the V5 amended, DVLA should have recieved a mismatch alert and contacted you.
VOSA doesn't monitor registration mis-matches, the MOT details are matched against DVLA records. DVLA gets the alert if the details don't match.
It's the testers responsibility to input the details as seen on the vehicle at the time of test.
However, as Wes said, it pays to check the details

When the dealer MOT'd it by typing in the incorrect number the computer would have 'created a new record' of your chasssis and registration number combination. This should then have flagged up at VOSAs end and they should have written to you asking you to check your documents
Also You as the owner should have checked the paperwork given to you at the time.

Who is at fault?
I bought a car 3 1/2 years ago from new and approx 12 months ago changed the reg number to a private plate. All paperwork correct. When the car was due for an MOT it passed and i kept the certificate in a safe place. On 31st March the Tax disc was due and the car needed a MOT certificate i couldnt find this and coundnt remember wether it was MOT`D or not, so decided to contact VOSA to ask them if they could tell me, I gave them the reg number of the car now ( the private reg ) and was informed that the car did not hold an MOT. I MOT`D the car and then taxed it. Then a couple of days ago i found the MOT that had been done 6 months ago, but unfortuntely the dealer who did it ( the same on i bought the car from ) had put the wrong reg number on the MOT cert. Thus when i phoned VOSA the details for that reg were not correct. I contacted the dealer who said they were not at fault and in fact the computer should have showed up the error, i passed this info onto VOSA who said the Dealer was at fault because they imputed the reg number wrong, did not check the reg number on the car during the test.
Who should refund me the money for having the MOT early
