got pulled by plod in 1990-91 in north london.guy pulled out behind me,followed 4 2 mls then blue lights etc.got out of my motor pissed off  and asked wot was his problem?his reply was car registered in luton-u in london.pointed out that it was what we in the trade called transport and that as london was a 30 ml walk i thought id take the car.(dire straits at wembley if anyone interested)went off head at copper and said i suppose i gotta come back down here and produce for you dimwit, his reply was dont bother, according to computer you only taxed it last week-must have had the documents then.this raises 2 questions-1 if they had that information back then(guy never saw my tax disc-1 am/car was never close enough)why do the assorted sorn/tax fine/adverts exist?second-what is the justification for current road tax,the police say its a way of checking a car is legal via mot etc but as my experience proves they have had that capability for quite a while.we lack the resources to effectively enforce the laws we already have.the technology exists to put a tax van on every motorway in the country but as a copper mate told me that wud mean every plod in the country chasing roadtax instead of burglars.if anyone out there can tell me how the computer mot will improve the above then im all ears.

You'd have to say looking at some of the garbage on the "pink slips" no they don't. I don't know what if any formal training they get in assessing vehicle defects but they even make themselves look prats on TV. Twice on the series traffic cops, firstly they pull over a fiesta for defective rear shockers which one of the pair bounces up and down on for a bit and says there you go look how bad they are, couldn't have been better if they'd just come out of the boxes and been fitted that day. Second one attending an RTA involving a motorbike, picks up a brake light bulb off the floor turns to camera and says he must've been braking hard look how melted that electrode is!

Nuff Said.

Anyway I was under the impression that the MOT side wan't going to be linked to the PNC or is it done through the DVLA side of things?

Do the local bobies know their stuff when they pull you over?

A customer a couple of day ago came into the station with a VDRS, she said the police pulled her over saying that the characters of the number plates were too small, strange i thought on that age of car, so I double checked the Regs, I found that vehicles used before September 01 2001 did not need to meet the criteria of charater heights being 79mm, or the width being 50mm, the actual plate charaters were close to 60mm and 45mm, using normal plate fonts.

Just costing the motorist some more uneceesary monies I suppose?

Was walking out to look at customers car on forecourt at lunchtime today, when saw police car pulling over a car that i recognized as one that I had tested earlier in the week. Couple were talking to the police when I got near them, other customers car close by, so I asked if all was OK. The lady(passenger I think) was pointing at the garage & when she saw me said to the policeman, ask him(me), they did it! At this point the lady said she had enough & walked off with her dog! I asked the policeman again what was going on & was told they had pulled the couple over as vehicle was shown on in car police system as not having current MOT. Told police I recognized vehicle as the one I had passed on Monday 9th June after initial failed test the previous week which we repaired. I was asked if I had any proof of this(strangely enough, not on me, no!)said I could print off copy of certificate. Said I would just finish off with customer I was originally dealing with, would only take a minute, then would go print off a copy! As I was saying goodbye to my customer, noticed police car driving off(impatient), managed to attract attention of man in suspect vehicle to ask what had happened. He said that the police had decided that my word that vehicle was tested was good enough & that the MOT status system the police use can take up to a week to update & off they went!! Man went on happy, looking for lady & her dog!

Two things spring to mind here.

1st. Seem to remember when VTS device was first put into use being told that VOSA database was updated straight away & system police use updated in 24hours, bearing in mind this was at lunchtime today (11th) & vehicle was passed on Monday (9th) around mid afternoon! Not exactly up to the minute is it!!

2nd. What are the chances of said vehicle being pulled over by the police on the forecourt of the very garage that MOT'd it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
