In my life time of experience working with both the motor trade and the customers who present their vehicles for mot testing, nobody has ever had a letter from a manufacturer to advise of a different age group of engine fitted to a vehicle, if the customer understood the idea behind an older engine fitted to a newer model to get it through the mot test, they would tell a tester it is an older engine anyway.

As I have said before the testers manual is a guide to the correct standards to be applied, this is not to say anybody is not already doing this practice, but if the testers do take note of its contents, and I know some don't by reading the questions being asked on here, then refering to section (7.3) and using the flow charts, the right emission test will be conducted each and every time, no need for gossip or public banter, the job will be right.

apart from You, who would expect a letter from manufactures? probably No one:P

what about a 1999 VW Golf, fitted with a 1991 G60 motor?;)

what about all the "Kit Cars" that have "SVA" Certification?:?

Well?

Don't forget the hydrocarbons, these must be equal to or less than 1200ppm, if not a tester can raise engine speed to around 2000RPM and recheck, if equal to or below 1200, its a pass and advise, as its runnning prity poor

if you check the manual there is a section that says if you cannot find it in the database or there is no cat fitted then go for the no cat test ie just whack the probe in and check idle emmisions which are supposed to be less than 3.5%

this car should have a cat but it dont!

Hi Anno - did you actually look for the engine code on the block, and/or use the VIN numbers as described in the Emissions data book, or did you just take a match off the analyser database.

For K, L & M reg cars you MUST find a FULL match on the actual engine codes, and model type etc from the engine block or VIN as described in the Emissions data book, otherwise it's a NON CAT test.

Cars registered 'N' - 01/08/1995 onwards MUST have a cat test, K,L & M only get a cat test if there's an exact match of the engine and model against the Data book.

Methinks you've applied the wrong standards - refer to the flow chart in the Testers Manual, AND the data book.

there were quite a few pre facelift cavaliers registered in 1992/k that still had the carburettor engines fitted , 1.6 ,16SV & 1.8 ,18SV were the main ones.

What about Engine Code on "The Vehicle"? And Not " In the Book" or in "the menu"  Is it present? Is it Readable? What about reading the SN`s? concerning emissions? pre 1995?

Ok, today at my station i had a vauxhall cavalier mk3, the reg date was 19/9/1992.

Went to do a cat test, and it failed on co,hc and lambda, carried on with the test to find it had no cat fitted, no lambda sensor, it's like it has never had one ever.

Note the book states that any class 4 car registerd on or after the 1/8/1992 must pass a cat test. so what do you do? the car has not got one fitted!
