Thanks for that. I have made enquiries at a police workshop where they do MOT's for the public.
This is the general gist of the reply.
Backplates relates to drums only. The splashguards as relates to discs have to be secure if fitted ,but it is likely that the discs will be carefully scrutinised for any damage/undue corrosion if not.
My local testing station said similar.

| brake disc back plates are not a testable item...back plates apply to drum brakes and rear parking brake shoes as they are affixed to backing plates

NikNak.
I dont think that refers to splashguards, I would pass and advise.
The term" Backplate" is usually applied to Drum brakes.
I do a lot of off roading, one of the things we do is remove the splashguards, as they can get mud packed between them and the disc, stopping the wheels from rotating!

The manual says if a backplate is missing its a fail

Is it a requirement that backplates/splashguards are fitted? I have removed what was left of the corroded mess from the front brakes on an otherwise tidy 87 Scirocco.
Advice please.
