Me thinks,
Paul is a little pissed off that a couple of 501 bulbs have cost so much?
I suggest that You Paul approach the Garage that carried out the repair, and the reason Why the Lamp was broken in the process, then either seek recompence or accept their explanation.

The mot manual says the following
Reason for rejection (MOT Failure)
A front position lamp shows a light other than white to the front, (or yellow if incorporated in a yellow headlamp)

So does this mean that even though the sidelight bulbs are blue in colour, as long as they are show white light when lit they are ok (which they do)?
Also does this E13 mark make any stand towards them being able to pass an MOT?
Can anybody state the actual requirement from the MOT book?
Cheers

Sorry 911 but you are incorrect.
Headlamps must show a predominantly white light, or yellow.
The predominantly bit was added to the manual recently to allow for the very mildly blue tinted bulbs in common use.
Front position lights (side lights) must also show white light, unless incorporated within yellow headlamps.

Hi Johnboy,
Thanks for your reply, I've been in touch with the manufactures of the bulbs and they say "The fact that they are E marked (the E13) states they have been tested and deemed road legal for use in the EU and therefore should NOT fail an MOT"
Do you know if this is recongnised under MOT law?

Side light and head light bulbs have to show predominently white light, they can have a slightly coloured tint, but to pass the MOT test, they should show mainly white light. That means there is a slightly grey area, human discression applies.
The tinted side light bulbs (501) tend to light up with more of a blue tint than the tinted headlight bulbs due to being of less wattage. But without seeing your actual lights, it's obviously impossible to judge.
If the mot tester changed your bulbs during the mot, he is in theory liable for any damage caused. If he failed the car and changed the bulbs after the mot as a favour, then normal working practices apply. He probably didn't intentionally cause the damage, headlights tend to become brittle with age due to the constant heating up and cooling down effects caused by normal operation.
As you have already paid the bill and taken the car, it is harder to make a claim, if you were there yourself, you may have been able to refuse to pay and ask for the new headlight to be removed, but then it would be arkward to issue a pass certificate, You're in a tricky situation, good luck.

I recently had my car failed for incorrect sidelight bulbs - which resulted in the garage changing the bulbs, breaking the headlamp in the process, then charging me for a new headlamp, bulbs and labour coming in at just under £180.
My question is:
are 501 W5W Xenon Extreme White E rated bulbs legal or not?
If this helps here are the markings on the bulbs
C E C
W5W12V
E13 256
The bulbs look dark blue when off and bright white when switched on.
Unfortunately I was out of the country at the time of the MOT and my parents paid and accepted the car back (I would not have done that!!) Has anybody got any suggestions on how I go about making my claim back for this money. The MOT was NOV 07.
Many Thanks.
Paul
