So how would you interpert part 1a of the exhaust section that states "A part of the system missing or excessively deteriorated"
Advise part of the system (CAT) has been replaced with a length of pipe.

| That's not quite the way it was explained to us on our testers course 18 months ago but hey it's all subjective isn't it.

If the cat was simply removed, then it has a part missing and will obviously fail.
Assuming that after removal of the cat, a pipe was fitted to replace it, then the system no longer has a part missing. And provided it is secure, has no major leaks, within the emissions standard and isn't excessively noisey, then it will pass.

If the cats have been removed then part of the exhaust is missing. Of course you have to know what you are looking for in the first place to fail it.

if you look in the mot regs a little more closely there is a mention, goes along the lines of if a car isnt fitted with a cat but passes the emissions test anyway then the owner shud b advised that the vehicle is probably producing noxious gases that are not being tested for.....pretty worthless youll probably agree! 01/08/1992>all vehicles identified on vosa info/matched engine/model etc cat test.not matched <01/08/1995 non cat test.post 01/08/1995 pretty much all passenger cars go thru a cat test of some sort.there are some exemptions from the above on assorted grounds, mainly on weight+passenger capacity.what all this means in practice is that many imports on k,l,m registrations are exempt.n reg onwards normally not.oh yeah, the foglight switch that you had added on import shud provide some sort of indication when its on+be fitted between centre+o/s at rear.pre 01/08/1992 is non cat test for all.

1 No
2 Yes
3 You cannot find anything in the MOT book because there is no requirement to have a cat.

Hi guys, I moderate a forum for MX5's and constant questions are :
1. Do we have to have a cat fitted to pass the mot irrespective of age of car
2. I know about differing test procedures for changing years of registration, however if my 1998 car has no cat, but passes the emissions test is that ok?
3. I can find no mention in the MOT book about the requirement to have a cat fitted, but various sources say that post a date in 1993 all cars must have a cat fitted...........confusion reigns over here, any chance that we can have some definitive guidance.
Oh one other question, what does the Design construction regs say about cats?
Thanks in anticipation
Geoff
