Stealth, Thanks very much for this useful reply.
I've just been round to the VTS where our company cars are MOT'd and one of the MOT guys there showed me the wall chart which says something like ignition on, abs lights up. Start engine - abs should go out. Doesn't seem to specify a time period for the ABS light to remain lit. However he said he doesn't see a problem and the car should pass in his opinion.
Therefore, I think I'll be OK.

It's normal for the ABS to self diagnose when the ignition is switched on, and to go out if no faults are found, the engine in most cases doesnt need to be running, as long as the ignition is on, and the ABS lamp is initially lit, the ABS module is activated.
Nicknak, when you get 5 mins at your VTS device do a VSI search for Mercedes C280, you will probably find the sequence is that the lamp remains lit for a specified period - say 10 seconds, with the ignition on, and then extinguishes. The time delay is to allow the system to self-diagnose.
There's no need to time the sequence, all it means is that if the light remains lit there's a problem.
Grahamcol, your system is probably running just fine, the time to be concerned is if the ABS lamp doesnt go out, or comes on while driving, if in doubt speak to your local Mercedes dealers.

Thanks for this. However, before taking any further action, I wonder what the prescribed sequence is ? My car handbook is vague on this. Does anyone know what the "wallchart" actually says regarding the ABS warning light sequence of my car - a Mercedes C280 Elegance 200 W reg (model W202).
Thanks

If they dont follow the prescribed sequence, it will fail as per the manual.

| My Merc C280 dash warning lights (including ABS warning) flash on very briefly with the ignition key and then immediately go out (prior to starting the engine). When the engine is started no warning lights display other than handbrake light when handbrake is engaged. My understanding however is that this car should continue to display warning lights (including ABS) continuously until the engine is started. Note the warning lights, including ABS, will light up with the engine running when there is a genuine issue, I've already proved this in 3 different ways so really there is no actual problem with the vehicle as such, however strictly speaking the car ABS warning light doesn't seem to follow the correct sequence and i'm worried it might fail the MOT. Car was like this when i bought it in September with a brand new MOT but was this MOt pass just a fluke or can i be reasonably sure the car will pass future MOT's like this?
