| You're right, I know- the only real longterm cure is complete new sills, but I'm sure that a good dose of dinitrol rc900 and some cavity wax will help prolong the sills until then. Failing that, I can always get rid while it's got a long mot!

"I'm going to drill the sills and fill them with waxoyl or something though- anything to reduce the number of times my wallet opens for car-related expenses is a good thing."
It'll be too late for that.
Once the corrosion has started you wont stop it by trying to seal it in.

castrolrob- I would say you're bob on there!
Funny thing is that my mum's micra is a year older, has a sunroof too and the sills are perfect.

| Car was mot'd today- no mention about the crossmember holes, so thank you for the reassurance on this one. It is just both sills towards the rear- the outers were worse than I thought so will need plating- damn!

| I had a look under the car yesterday- the sills are pretty much ok- offside one has been patched in the past and is still sound, the other sill has a bit of crusty metal, but doesn't seem holed- yet. Inner sills/floorpans are fine- no traces of rust.

dont think that there is anything testable in that area, however if its rotted thru then check below the b pillars along the sill, will probably be, at the very least, corroded.you need to look about level with the end of the door aperature.would be surprised if there isnt already a repair there...

it is an advisory item , the only way a crossmember such as this would fail when not in a prescribed area would be if it adversely affected braking or steering & this is highly unlikely on a micra .

Provided the corrosion is at least 30 cm from any steering or suspension mounting points you should be ok

My Micra will be due its mot soon- when I bought it the lower front crossmember was starting to look rusty and now it has got holes in 2 or 3 places.
None of the suspension/steering components attach to the crossmember, so it seems that it might not be a prescribed area in that respect? Or will it be a fail as it is attached to the main structure?
The only things that attach to the lower front crossmember itself are a bolt-on front to rear member under the engine that carries the front engine mount and a bolt on section that goes down from the bonnet striker mechanism to the front crossmember. About a third of the way up the crossmember uprights is where it is spot welded onto the main chassis sections that run from the bumper back to the bulkhead. The top crossmember section goes between the inner wings and carries the headlight mounts and bonnet catch.
I am hoping this will be an advisory, though I might be a tad too optimist on this one.
Does anyone have any advice on this at all?
Many thanks
Just found this pic on a micra site- red arrows are where mine has 1 inch holes, green arrows are possible holes but I can't be sure without taking the bumper off
