Well, I took the Surf in personally today and - surprise - it passed.
Thanks for your comments

Diferent regs, you are talking about testing and plating regs. And they press it down with a load simulater

I do not want to contradict you but 12-15 years ago I was taking a Transit Crewbus based on a 190 Van and it failed a few times because of the rear brake pressure regulation valve being stuck., this was at a government testing station. It did not get any use as the van was so heavy with equipement that the valve never had to work. They tested it by lifting the back of the vehicle with a hydraulic platform while it was on the rolling road.

Many thanks - I'll keep this bit of wisdom in my back pocket until (if) they fail it again.

The tester was wrong in this instance.

The MOT test does not include checking for correct operation or movement of the piston. The tester need only check that the linkage / lever is not siezed by giving it a wiggle / tug etc.

A vehicle can legitimately pass the mot with a completely siezed solid load sensing valve - provided the linkage is free.

Doesn't make sense admittedly - but thats the case.

Usually I take our Toyota Hilux Surf !994 (not fulltime 4x4) to the same MOT station and it passes without a problem.
Last week my lady partner took the car and.......it failed. The Surf has a load pressure sensing valve fitted on the offside just forward of the spare wheel. I spoke to the tester on the phone who said that when the brake pedal is pressed hard one should be able to feel the movement of the small plunger in the sensor.
Having now spent £115+ on a new sensor and fitting (not at the MOT garage) I still cannot detect any plunger movement. Any observations? Should there be movement?
The vehicle was stationery when I tested it and it was not road tested at the MOT:?

Next MOT Friday 1st Feb.
