Thanks; I've found the DVTANI website and they explain the test procedure in four stages:
http://www.dvtani.gov.uk/vehicletesting/viewteststages.asp
Airbag light is not one of them, so I should be ok apart from emissions which may be affected by the sensors. I'll have it checked well in advance!
Thanks for your help.

I suggest that you contact the DVTA who are responsible for the test in N Ireland. Their website has details of the test in detail and I think the ABS light will be your only concern.
Cars are tested from 4 yrs old as opposed to 3 in UK

So the rules may be different in Northern Ireland?
How can I confirm this?

the only warning light on that list that would cause a fail is the abs light , if this is illuminated & indicating a fault at time of test it will fail.
airbag light is advisory , engine management light won't matter as long as the emissions are ok .
just realised you are in ulster , might be different rules there.

I have a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 which I bought last August and is now approaching MOT. I know the history of the car, it was allegedly flood damaged however this was found to be the owner (who wanted rid of it) filling it up through the window with a hosepipe...! There was no engine or mechanical damage at all.
Morning starting is a bit of a lottery as to which warning lights come on - airbag warning light is constantly illuminated. These cars have two colours of engine warning light - amber is advisory, red is a warning and you must stop. Sometimes the amber service light comes on at startup, sometimes it doesn't.
My local Volvo dealer tells me that water has got into the electrics and they don't even know where to start with the airbag service. With the engine service they state I MAY need a throttle sensor and a lambda sensor but can't guarantee that this is what is required to extinguish the light - it may just be corrosion in a circuit somewhere.
If I drive through a puddle I sometimes get the DSTC warning light and ABS warning light illuminate, but they usually go out after a short time.
SO: if I know the problems to be ECU / electrically related, and the actual components are fine, can I be failed on the warning lights themselves even if the full mechanical test we have over here in Ulster shows them to be in working order?Last edited on Sun Mar 9th, 2008 12:00 pm by Paudman
