Damned if you do damned if you don't...pass and advise cover your ass..
As for the original question take off your "illegal" tints and either wear shades or put a lighter tint on......

Surely that can't be right?
If you were to remove a tint film without the vehicle owners consent it would equally be breaking the law.

The way the law is written it actually implies that if you service and mot or repair a vehicle that has an illegal tint film on it, when you give the car back to the customer you are then breaking the law. I would hope that common sence would pervail and nobody would ever be put in that position, but there is a possibility.

The Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 as amended specify the minimum levels of light that must pass through the windscreen and front side windows.
The Limits are:
- Motor vehicles first used on or after 1 April 1985:
- The light transmitted through the windscreen must be at least 75%.
- The front side windows must allow at least 70% of light to be transmitted through them.
If the glass is tinted to a point whereby it lets through less light, the vehicle does not meet legal requirements.
Ironically this statement was prepared by VOSA who are responsible for the administration of the MoT scheme. As previous writer stated however, checks of tinted glass are not part of the MoT test.
I think Trading standards have to get involved but your best bet might be to 'persuade' the dealer that trading standards will be approached if he doesn't sort the matter out. Basically you have been sold a vehicle that does not meet legal requirements and surely the sales of goods act must come into play. If vehicle bought privately this will be nigh on impossible to resolve.

as far as mot regulations go there is nothing in them about window tint , so they would not fail an mot even if they were illegal for road use.
the police use construction & use regulations , this is where the problem comes .

got a 2002 new car on 31/12/2007 and there has been many things not working but now i got stopped by the police because the window tint on the two front doors of the car were only 28% and it should be 70% so got a £30 fine but this firm tint was on the car when it left this garage .
I now understand when a car goes through an MOT they don't use a machine but the police do but where we got the car from will not do anything , Trading stardards and VOSA say the same .
Please is there anything we can do
