I think in other words if a car following you cannot see you, your car would fail, other than that (pass and advise) I think

David, during the test we cannot use "acceleration" only rev's..

Also driving a car is not part of the "emissions" test criteria,so the car following is not an issue.

The "original" Test Station should have carried out an Emission Test. How did they "know" it would fail,if they did not test it?

robmp states that the smoke emitted is not that bad.

Obviously I was not present at the time, but if presented to me I would have done a BET test,if failed I would have then carried out a full Cat test..If it still failed at least I would have evidence that I had done a proper test  (oil temp correct/rev's correct etc)..More importantly  i would have a printout to back up my findings.

Also remember VOSA say we have to "give the presenter the benefit of doubt"..In the case of emissions this is not true,it either passes or fails..How do we know what a vehicle is emmiting is right or wrong?? Unless we use the Gas Analiser.??

run a 1.8t myself(passat-same engine)and its generally(but not always) the turbo oil seal.smoke emitted must be considered excessive or a cause of possible damage to be considered a failure/refusal to test item.rev it in enclosed space like they probably did and see how bad it looks....as an aside if you leave it, or if its been like that for a while, will not have done the cat much good.

Hi,

Just had my VW GOLF 1.8 T (Petrol) fail it's MOT due to emissions.

MOT centre didn't even attempt the tests as said there was smoke coming from the exhaust.

I was aware there was a bit of smoke coming from exhaust on start up - local garage think the Turbo may be on it's way out.

Have just spoken to local garage (different from MOT centre) and they say that smoke on a petrol car is only an issue if it is sufficient to obscure vision of other drivers, it's definately not that bad!.

Anyone had any experience of this?

Cheers

ROB
