If you're stuck for a date of first use then the dvla online vehicle tax site is useful as you can make an enquiry by reg number and manufacturer and it gives you the date of first use amongst other things. Not officially the right way to do it but I'm sure they won't mind too much.
Incidentally older vehicles seem to be more likely to have incorrect vin numbers entered by the DVLA especially stuff with lots of noughts in them (vauxhalls and fiats and suchlike).

At First presentation for MOT Test, It is Advised by VOSA that the V5 is made available so the tester can check, The Registration No and VIN on the Vehicle and the Registration No and VIN on the V5 Actually Match, and then fill in the V5 reference Window on MOT Computerisation.
This is Not a requirement to carry out "The Test" and Does Not Stop Us from Issuing a Pass. or Whatever.
However If as in previous postings, New Vehicles, Can and Have had Registration Plates fitted to The Wrong Vehicle, or the DVLA have Incorrect Info at First Registration? Or by Human Error, Have Missread Info and subseqently entered it into "The Records" Then, Maybe We Are the first to notice The Issue?
I`ve Had some Vehicles in that are 10 Years Old and details Are Incorrect! Where Do We go from Here? "Create a New Record"
"Panic"! OMG ! What Now? Date of First Use?
So, Although Not a Requirement, It really Does Help.
Thanks peeps,
Wes.

timbo,
I know where you are coming from ABOUT V5, however we do not know what the car is etc, etc, and so the V5 maybe required or it could be a refusal to test. While most of the info on it is as you say irrelevant it could be needed.

Sorry to be dense on this but are you speaking as a tester or the owner of the car in the OP?

| What's on the V5 is irrelevant, the car is tested as presented for the test and could be different to the V5 description.

Really? Didn't know that - I thought you had to have it if it had never been tested before. If so it's good news as we can't find it anywhere....hopefully it will turn up.
Have just taxed car online and the insurance thing wasn't a problem, so that's okay.
Thanks for your help.

Sorry this is probably a very stupid question. I drive my boyfriend's car so the V5 is in his name. I am the only named driver on the insurance.
The car is due its first MOT - will there be any problems if I take the car to its MOT with the V5 which is not registered in my name or address? Do you think I should check with the garage first?
I am wondering if this will cause problems with getting a new tax disc too...
Thanks!
Claire
