To the best of my knowledge, we're still peddling the EU agenda of 4-2-2. No good news to report and probably not enough in the trade papers to keep this high tempo. I am not sure what happens when and next but think something is happening soon...

Human nature in tough economic times says that the popular political move would be to save the motorist an occasional £50; motorists will then see tales of unsafe cars as the industry bleating to charge them more than is necessary with a 'modern' car...

The reality is that significant recent stats confirm that one in 5 UK cars failed their first test. Imagine the safety consequences if those cars carried on being unsafe and potentially dangerous on our roads for a further 12 months.

I think Spanish stats support this with c30%+ failing their first test which I assume was after 4 years on the road.

The other element is that of uninsured drivers. At present there are three ways to check the cars on our roads, insurance, VED and MOT. If an MOT test is not compulsory at Year 3 I suspect that more unscrupulous drivers may take this as their invitation to evade VED and insurance for a further year... certainly worth exploring this combination/mindset with insurers and DVLA I'd have thought.

Someone bigger and better than me will know more and, hopefully, is out there influencing key people who need to know why our system is better than the EU schedule.

Certainly if it were my main business and a source of income I'd be doing all I could to collect facts and figures, influence the right people and canvass the right partners like FOXY Lady Drivers Club http://www.foxyladydrivers.com.  We're all about keeping women safer on the roads and know from considerable experience that if they don't have to visit a garage, many motorists, female and male, do nothing for themselves in-between.

The mindset that modern cars need little maintenance overlooks safety issues like tyres, brakes, lights etc.

Like you, I look forward to reading what the latest is on this front.

Tell us more Mac...

Sorry to raise an old subject, but has anything become of the 4-2-2 MOT or has the Government backed down completely.

Count on FOXY to help with communications to women drivers as and when you have something to say.

As I see it, there are good reasons why women might be affected more than men by this proposal. Many live alone; many drive low mileage and may think they don't need regular services; few are interested in car engines and very few of us (speaking honestly...) do regular car maintenance ourselves.

Assuming that the government consults and agrees that our MOT is the best system going, then it's back to normal but perhaps there's a lesson learned here for future communications to consumers.

If there is a problem post consultation, you'll want to talk to the big motor insurance and warranty players if they haven't come forward yet. Presumably they'd be expected to pick up the tab for more accidents/claims.

Leave it with you Mac - let me know if I can help in future.

I think we need to show more well constructed arguments against this idea.if we all do some research into the 4.2.2 system and post our comparisons in this thread, then we have more ammunition if needed should the idea go ahead after the meeting in spring....agreed?

I imagine that this is covered somewhere else but I can't find it.

I run a drivers club for women and know very well that some of us don't maintain our cars too well or get our cars serviced regularly enough - we need the MOT to keep us and others safe on the roads. We all know it's not just women either, nor is it just older cars when many fail their first MOT test.

The point of this post is that I've written a blog about the government's possible proposal and you might want to add your comments to raise general awareness of this issue.

Ideally I'd like a senior industry luminary to add serious context to this as there is a liberal school of thought suggesting that all debate is a good thing about this no matter the thinking. I worry that if we sit on the fence, being British, we might end up sitting on something EU which isn't anything like as good as our system and costs us lives and jobs. Surely this would never happen?

Over to you chaps - you have our support in future and we talk to women drivers across the UK. The more we spread the word, the better.
