Have you had your NTT 3 day course yet? if you have how did you do it without a smart card?? The process is normally to go for the NTTA tick box test having applied for your smart card, the card takes about a week to come normally, you will then be offered a date for the three day course, one day MOT comp and two days bible bashing, there is a bit of a test at the end of the two days but you can use the manual. If you pass that you them go back to your place of work to practice testing only. No testing under supervision. When you feel that your know the routiene and are happy with the equipment and, can do a demonstration test you contact the area office informing them that you are ready for the demo test or, if you know the phone number of the local VE, phone him as he will be the one to come and check you. Be ready for some questions based on your knowledge of the testing manual. You can also register a test in training mode on the VTS device whilst having a practice.

ok, from the date my employer applied I had letter within 2 weeks tops. Unfortunately they wanted me in Norwich 3 weeks after that on the exact date I went to Florida to see my sister. I returned the letter (which you have to do anyway saying yes/no) and added note ssaying anytime after june 27th when I returned.
I had only been back 1 day when letter came through door asking me to be there 5 days later....
As mentioned I passed that part but am still waiting for next letter to go to Thetford for the practical part, it has now been couple weeks I guess.
At present obviously not testing but according to my boss I need passport style photo to get my "smart card" and then I can start testing. As for being totally qualified I guess the other tuition is required first. Apparentely I'll test under supervision for a set period (ie, either of my boss's as they are partners or Dave another tester at our place)
Maybe someone else here could enlighten us both on this bit?
Regards anyway Turk

Turk,
how long did it take to be a qualified tester? eg applying, confirming dates, sitting exam, etc and being let loose to test?
thanks

Well when i said qualifications as such I was trying to say NVQ's etc. When I started working with cars it was around 1980, straight after school. I was for the last 2 years at school doing 1 day at our local college on M.V.E.
Due to unforseen circumstances I never took the exam towards the end of my school/college days. I have since though been on many courses in the motor and body industry, I am also a quallified panel beater/ sprayer but enjoy the mechanical side much better nowadays and also favour my health!
I've done various brake courses, diagnostics and tuning courses, admittidely I have certificates but not the papers A garage would expect like these NVQ's ..
The "boy" at our garage is now starting year 3 of college and tells me he will not need to sit this test as he will be more experienced than any of us!! The fact he has been to college allows him to automatically become a tester according to him..
I've been told I'm a good mechanic / worker and if I'm shown anything new I can do it, I've been enquiring at a college near me now about maybe sitting a test after a short period of evening class?? I figure I don't need 3 years at college and I don't mean that big headed or anything but surely some people understand where I'm coming from?
Regards Paul

just thought I'd mention it, took the test today and only had 4 of the questions from the sample sheet didn't think it was too bad though, especially as I scraped through and passed , should hopefully be testing pretty soon so my bosses say, just have to do the pratical side now which I'm more than confident on.

Hi, I'm going for my test at VOSA tomorrow, the one where you sit the questions, I'm employed at a Garage and have been in the motor trade 20 years +. I do not have any qualifying papers as you would normally get nowadays and so my employer tells me this is what I have to do.
I have read a previous post which enlightens the questions regarding the test, however, my boss says there are at least 4 different papers and only some questions from their sample paper will be included.
I'm mainly enquiring if there is anyplace I can look tonight for an insight into this, I am not looking for direct answers as such but but maybe some clues as to what to expect??
Any help would be much appreciated as I'm rather nervous about tomorrow,
Great Forum BTW, kind regards Paul,,
