To become an AE (MoT garage proprietor) you have to satisfy VOSA that you are of good repute ie no recent criminal convictions and have sound financial standing ie not recently declared bankrupt.  If you employ an MoT tester you can start testing from day one.

For you to become a tester yourself, you need to have suitable qualifications or alternatively pass a VOSA exam.  You then need to attend a Nominated Tester Training course.

Hi all,

I am in the process of starting a new garage, which I want to include a new MOT bay from day one.  Is this possible ?  The info. on the website about becoming an MOT tester states that you must be of sound reputation and finance.

The finance side is easy to prove, but the day we open the doors we wont have a reputation.  I intend to employ a fully qualified mechanic and tester, but how long is it before I can apply to be a registered MOT tester ?

Or in fact is there a way of being an MOT approved garage from day one ?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
