the unfortunate part of all this is that brainwaves of this nature tend to be dreamed up by management echelons trying desperately to justify their(largely parasitical)existence.think of the rebranding from ministry to vosa a few yrs back, what a pointless exercise-same people different name.words like dynamic review of the infrastructure, synergistic interaction, redeployment and the like tend to litter their conversation like verbal diarrhea at around this point.if they dont come up with continual"improvements"then the folks above them tend to realise that these guys are essentially unneccesary so to a large extent exercises of this nature tend to be self defence.as such its an ongoing process, all we can do is get on with it and wait for their next flash of brilliance to land in our laps.itll probably still be steaming slightly!

I think that the point that they're trying to get across in a clumsy sort of way is that to quote a power phrase much loved by one of our directors "perception is the reality" as far as the customer is concerned if the place looks professional it must be professional. And I'm not saying this is the case but if you pull into a garage and the bins are overflowing and the floors are covered in oil and there's grass growing out of the gutters you thing damn if they can't be bothered to sort that stuff out when they work in it all the time how much care are they going to take with my motor that they see for a couple of hours once a year? They're trying to make an impression so that joe public who pay all our wages at the end of the day thinks that thier £50 odd buys them a a professional for an hour that is going to do a thorough inspection for them, and I know that that's simply not the reality cause there's some top notch guys working in bad conditions and some first class halfwits working in palaces but the public can only see the window dressing most of the time!

i welcome it.was winding the vosa rep up in order to ensure more visits.this system is being used to ensure more work with less examiners.we dont get enough visits, as it is.if more people used this approach they might even have to employ enough people to do the job.

My understanding is that no rules have been changed, so to hear that you have been told off for grass growing out of, what was it a gutter or something is nonsense. Vosa have to do the visit because its they, who will do any visits to the garage. They are looking at all aspects of how the whole buisness is being run and scoring it from 1 to 5. This information will then be used to effectivly target, where they feel there is a need. The worst senario is that you score 5 on each question, that being the case you will then be deemed possibly to be high risk and therefore will have a visit 3 times a year, this may be a station visit or maybe a car put in for test etc. If after that there is no problem you will then move to perhaps an amber and then green so, if you are doing the job right there is nothing to worry about. Reading such comments as being tol off etc seems strange I can only assume the ves doing the visits there have not been explaining this to you, what has anyone else been told?

What i did find amusing, you need to calibrate your Tyre Depth Gauge, and record this on hard form, and keep it with the rest of your calibrations, and also log it on your VTS Devise.

I think Bob Hill will be doing your area, so be aware!!!!

We've never had any problems with Bob. He's one of the better VE's.
The last time we saw him, he wasn't fully up to speed with the VTS device, though. He had to keep referring to some computer expert colleague for any questions we threw at him.

As for calibrating the TDG - we've been doing that for quite a number of years. We have two - each with their own unique serial number engraved on the body.

What about the 'flat' piece of glass used to calibrate the TDG ?  Are we supposed to calibrate that ? :? ;)

Following on from an abundance of calls over the past couple of months, i thought i would put the question to this forum.

I had a call from a garage in Cardiff yesterday following a "Risk Assesment" visit, where he was spitting feathers, and rightly so.

He was first "told off" for having grass growing out of a section of guttering at the side of his garage, and was told to remove this as soon as possible, as it was the first thing that caught his eye as he walked toward the garage. Next on the list was....the dreaded "How many times a day do you clean your toilets"?

Next up was "Do you think it is about time you decorated your waiting area" along with. "When was the last time you had new chairs in your waiting area".

Now, my point is simple, this SHOULD NOT be a  VOSA issue, I hear everyday how under staffed they are, and this why a lot of garges have not had a visit for over two years, but now some bright spark higher up the food chain now believes it is a good idea to send them on a "Kim and Aggie - How clean is your MOT Station" rampage.

I suggest they get the Vehicle Examiners out on the road to deal with REAL issues, and get someone else come in to "Help" the garages to increase there appearance of there business.

All i can say really is "what a great bit of PR" between VOSA and the garage.
