Hi all.
I was on a Vosa course the other day and we were told this:
If you ask the presenter of a vehicle if he is from Vosa and he is... then he has to tell you the truth.
How easy can it get?

top post guy,ne1 who cant spot a person with a major interst in their vehicle and possibly make a connection shudnt b testing in the first place.how much of a hint shud ne1 need?observation is part of our job after all!

Had an incognito test a few years back, another teater was doing this guys car who was lurking around at the back of the bay. Ufortunatly for him he had took me a week before for refresher training! As I was out of sight of the vosa guy i'd got a big cardboard sign with the words "undercover ministry man" and a big arrow waving it at my collegue who was nearly wetting hisself while trying to test the car!

had an incognito over 10yrs ago,this 1 was unusual in as much as the ministry guy who presented it had tested it first and decided everything was hunky dory.normally they only want to see u go thru a proper test routine/use assistant etc.when i completed the test the guy identified himself as ministry(no shock!)and congratulated me on a very good+thorough test and was exceptionally happy-right up till i pointed out it had failed!at this point there were suddenly major deficiencies!fortunately i had witnesses.failure items were difficult to spot,frayed handbrake cable/obliterated c/v boot/12" of sill missing etc.apparently the tit concerned had already visited(and closed)6 other stations that morning.i was informed(off the record)by local vosa rep that the guy was an asshole on his way out the door and if i kept my head down and gob shut i wouldnt b seeing or hearing from vosa for a few years.i ended as the proud possesor of a disciplinary letter that also stated it was an exceptionally good test and the faults id found had been caused by prior incognito tests.imagine my surprise when i accessed my record on vts and found a 14yr old disciplinary was still on my record.if i had stabbed some one or been convicted of drink driving i could realistically hope for a cleaner record!due to this and other occurences i have had a low to zero opinion of vosa,their enforcement and organisation.as an aside the local ministry guys began using our premises for local appeal tests at this point.must have been down to the low standard of testers(theirs!)one our now former testers had an inverted appeal on a land rover a few mnths back.he screwed the job up so badly he shud have been banned for life.nope,hes still got a licence.

I had an incognito test about 4 years ago. I was a but suspicous as he wanted to sit in the viewing area where he made a big issue out of doing the crossword in the paper (Yes, I know now there was a notebook inside it!) but to be honest at the time I just thought he was a harmless nutter and carried on normally. I failed the car on a bulging rear brake hose and the undertray hanging down (only held by one clip instead of the usual six). After the test he produced his identification and asked me to put the car back on the ramp to see the defects. Apparently I should have not have failed it on the undertray although he did say could I please fix it before he drove away (cable ties, wonderous things!) and was horrified by the brake hose. Apparently it was a car he had hired for the occasion and he intended to speak harshly to the hire company! Still drove it away like it though.
Basically he said I had done fine, we gave him a cup of tea and chatted for about half an hour and once he was off the record as it were he was a really nice bloke. Apparently that was mutual because when I had my next routine visit I saw his report where he said what a friendly garage we were. My advice? Just do your best test for anyone but perhaps make it more obvious what you are doing if youre doubtful about who you are doing it for and you will have no problems. Oh, I have also had two "walk in and retest a car you have just tested" visits. Both of those went fine so I must be building up a small store of brownie points. When I have enough I am going to fail a series one Landrover just for being a series one Landrover because in my opinion they were unsafe in the 50's and they are unsafe now. And then I shall retire! (purely the testers opinion of course!)

Rob,
I wish all VOSA areas were like this, unfortunatly they are not, sometimes it is nice to receive a letter stating you have conducted a good test. However, with a Transport Minister stating the MOT Scheme is an administritive nightmere, i wonder just how long they will keep this up?

ive been "incogged" as we put it and was advised to slow down after the vosa man got out his warrant card.most of our incoggs are taxed in manchester we have noticed over the years.

had a few over the years,(incognitos i mean)theyre not generally hard to spot,how many punters want to watch their car being tested?normally a few clues on the car as well if you keep your eyes open.heres one to try out if you really want to***them off,write fao(insert your local ministrys rep name here)on the advisory adding that their equity card will be posted to them in due course.advisory is testers opinion only,they normally start frothing at the mouth at this point!
