DVSA has a blog… you know what to do!
In the MOT Testing Magazine interview with DVSA’s Head of Policy (Spotlight, page 16.), Lesley Young cites a positive posting from a Tester on DVSA’s blog as indicating it’s all bright and rosy in DVSA’s garden.
The editor knows from what Testers and AEs tell him, and from their postings on our own online Forum, that not all DVSA’s blog entries are uncritical. The message is clear; if you have a problem with DVSA and how they run the MOT Scheme – let them know!
That’s what a blog is for! Lesley Young is DVSA’s most senior manager and reads their blog, so send her a message directly!

Pico introduces Sight Block Low Pressure Fuel System Tester

The Sight block is now available from Pico in the Low Pressure Fuel Kit (PQ071). The kit comes with a stop valve for testing a negative pressure fuel pump under load, and three sets of hose barbs for connecting to different size fuel hoses.
By using the quick-couple barb connectors supplied with the Sight Block, you can effortlessly connect to the vehicle fuel supply and return lines. With a connection like this, you can monitor the integrity of the fuel priming circuits with regards to aeration, colour and direction of flow.
A typical example can be found in this case study, where multiple Sight Blocks were used to diagnose a VW caddy with prolonged engine cranking: www.picoauto.com/library/case-studies/vw-caddy-1-9-tdi-lack-of-power-poor-cold-start.
Split or wrongly fitted seal rings on filters or worn fuel supply pipes can be a real problem.
The sight block forms the classic ‘T’-junction, to which we can connect the WPS500X to add pressure analysis to fuel priming and return lines. With the stop valve, the efficiency of fuel pumps, fuel lines, O-ring seals, hoses and pipework can be rapidly evaluated while you monitor the positive/negative pressures with PicoScope for the shut-off period.
The waveform above demonstrates the maximum negative priming pressure achieved from a high-pressure diesel pump with the stop valve closed (transfer pump integrity test).

Keyless entry signal carrier detector
Here at Pico Technology we are always looking to solve problems with modern vehicle system as manufacturers change the way their car works. Keyless entry has been around for years and now we finally have a way of testing the sensors.
By using PicoScope with the Keyless entry signal carrier detector (TA330), a 3 metre long lead with the detector on the end, the technician can detect the presence of a keyless entry carrier signal in the frequency range of 125 – 140 KHz (as used by most manufacturers). The device has a short range by design, allowing the technician to check each pick-up coil in turn to identify faulty units.
The detector does not pick up or decode the high frequency secure information used to unlock the vehicle. It only displays a waveform of the present signal on the screen.

Impact driver and power bar combined – new from Laser Tools
The manual impact driver is a quick and trusted solution for corroded or frozen fixings, for example, over-torqued wheel nuts. The newly introduced Impact Power Bar (part number 6946) from Laser Tools offers advantages over the traditional impact driver.
While keeping your hand well away from the hammer, the 370 millimetre bar places increased leverage on the fastener. Much more leverage than can be applied with a standard impact driver. This keeps the socket or driver bit snug against the fastener and stops rebound so that the full force of the hammer impact is transmitted.
It’s especially useful with smaller fasteners — you can be reluctant to apply too much turning force to a small fastener, as it is very likely to just break off. But with the impact power bar the sudden shock as well as the strong rotational force will release the most stubborn of fasteners of all sizes.
Safer to use with its impact absorbing composite handle, the impact power bar from Laser Tools delivers the required results and will be the first choice for the professional technician.
Available now from your Laser Tools stockist at a typical price of £116.93 (price includes VAT) but remember to check for the best price and special offers.

No more AdBlue spillage with these dedicated AdBlue filling funnels from Laser Tools
AdBlue diesel exhaust fluid is a fact of life for the modern diesel engine, so to make life a bit easier Laser Tools have introduced these AdBlue Filling Funnels specially designed to screw directly onto the AdBlue filler neck. Two versions are available — straight (part number 6856) or angled access (part number 6865) — and they make the AdBlue filling process quick and easy, and best of all — no messy spillage!
Screw the funnel straight on to the AdBlue filler neck then lift the internal anti-spill valve. The funnel is large with a generous 1.1 litre capacity. Keep filling until the AdBlue fluid stops flowing into the vehicle’s reservoir, then simply drop down the internal valve. Now unscrew the funnel and lift it clear. There will no leaks or mess as you transfer the unused fluid back into the original container and leave a full AdBlue reservoir on the vehicle.
The angled AdBlue filler funnel is the same design as the straight version, with the internal anti-spill valve, but with an angled funnel connector. This is the one to use if the AdBlue filler neck is awkward to access or set at an angle.
AdBlue spillage can be costly, messy and once it dries the resulting white crystals can be difficult to remove. But not a problem if you are using one of these AdBlue filling funnels from Laser Tools.
Available now from your Laser Tools stockist at a typical price of £35.67 for 6856 and £42.82 for 6865 (prices include VAT). Remember to check for the best price and special offers.

BorgWarner’s Regulated Two-stage Turbocharger Drives New Diesel Engine from Jaguar Land Rover
BorgWarner’s leading regulated two-stage (R2S®) turbocharging solution improves low-end torque, engine performance and fuel efficiency while contributing to reduced emissions for Jaguar Land Rover models equipped with the new 2.0-liter I4 diesel engine.
- Improves performance and fuel economy while reducing emissions
- R2S® system featuring turbocharger with latest VTG technology
- Close development partnership between BorgWarner and Jaguar Land Rover
BorgWarner’s award-winning regulated two-stage (R2S®) turbocharging technology boosts the new 2.0-litre I4 diesel engine with 177 kW (240 HP) from Jaguar Land Rover. Initially available for the Range Rover Sport and new Land Rover Discovery SUVs utilising the new engine, BorgWarner’s advanced turbocharging technology features a water-cooled compressor housing, offers improved low-end torque and enhances engine performance and efficiency while contributing to emissions reduction.
“Our long-standing expertise in the field of advanced turbocharging technologies for combustion and hybrid propulsion systems enables BorgWarner to supply Jaguar Land Rover the leading R2S turbocharging system to help them achieve fuel efficiency and performance targets for their new 2.0-liter diesel engine,” said Frédéric Lissalde, President and General Manager, BorgWarner Turbo Systems.
“We are pleased to expand our successful business relationship with Jaguar Land Rover by working together closely and providing a wide range of our turbocharging technologies for several other engines from Jaguar Land Rover to improve the fun-to-drive experience for their customers even more.”
BorgWarner’s R2S turbocharging solution consists of two series-connected turbochargers of different sizes to deliver high boost pressures and smooth power over the entire engine speed range.
One turbocharger features the company’s latest variable turbine geometry (VTG) technology for the high-pressure stage combined with a larger B03 water-cooled turbocharger optimized for low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation. Controlled by an electric actuator, BorgWarner’s VTG turbocharger responds quickly at low engine speeds, resulting in a rapid rise in boost pressure for nearly instant acceleration. As engine speed increases, a bypass gradually redirects the exhaust gas flow towards the larger, low-pressure turbocharger until it takes over the workload completely to maintain fluid power delivery and provide excellent efficiency.
BorgWarner’s R2S turbocharging technology allows quick adaptation to changes in the engine’s operating conditions, thereby facilitating fast response times and contributing to significantly reduced emissions.
